Transforming lives

2018

Trumbull, Connecticut

Our task was to design and build a tree house that could offer hope and inspiration for Josh, his friends and his family.

For this project we were asked to design and build a tree house for a teenager named Josh. Josh was in the hospital, so we communicated with him via Zoom, (this was way before Zoom was cool back in 2018). We developed a design in partnership with Peter Van Geldern. Josh imagined a big club house, where he and his friends could play video games and get away from it all. That summer we built the tree house in Josh’s back yard and celebrated Josh’s full recovery from his illness. This was a big team effort involving material donations from local lumber yards and labor donated from a few local construction companies. Day + Age managed the build to completion. We also worked with an engineer to make sure we were designing something that would stand up to time.

The main Girders are installed using Tree-Bolts (12” long custom made hardware). Front siding is live edge saw-mill clapboards. Electricity and data are trenched underground to the base of the trees.

The mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation is to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. The children we serve are fighting for their lives, and their families are doing everything that they can to help them in their battles.
